Why I Stopped going to FinCon

02/21/202002/20/2020 / othalafehu / 9 Comments

It is hard for me to write that sentence about FinCon. I absolutely love parts of the FIRE community. I love how unselfish it is. Bloggers will share secrets rather than hoard them. People share their intimate financial information with complete strangers. All because we share a dream of buying back our free time on … Continue reading Why I Stopped going to FinCon

It Gets Easier (FIRE)

01/16/202001/16/2020 / othalafehu / 5 Comments

Much like those anti-bullying campaigns from a few years ago (It Gets Better), the sometimes tedious nature of slow progress and over-fretting about your own net worth gets easier. I remember way back, like 2 years ago back, there were only a few blogs doing monthly net worth updates. I posted mine religiously and openly … Continue reading It Gets Easier (FIRE)

Too many people Making too many problems And not much love to go round Cant you see This is a land of confusion. - Genesis I have never been one to tell you that your baby is ugly, but If your baby looks like Winston Churchill, I am not going to fawn over how cute … Continue reading Disturbing FIRE trends

My Personal F.I.R.E. Story

12/03/201803/19/2019 / othalafehu / 11 Comments

I have touched upon this background story more than once. It was not until FinCon that I realized how central it was to my personal FIRE journey. Several times when I was trying to boil down my history with FIRE I kept coming up with the same short story. My in-laws were wonderful human beings. … Continue reading My Personal F.I.R.E. Story

The Makings of A Real Movement

11/11/201811/10/2018 / othalafehu / 12 Comments

The concept of FIRE (Financial Independence / Early Retirement) certainly seems to be sweeping the nation. One need only look around as FIRE related articles creep into the mainstream media. While still in its neophyte stages as far an an economic theory/lifestyle goes, there does seem to be consensus that it is a 'movement', dare … Continue reading The Makings of A Real Movement

WHY OTHALAFEHU?

The RUNES are the ancient writing system of the Germanic peoples handed down to man from the pagan god Odin.

Othala is the rune for ancestral home, the hearth, and sacred enclosure. Fehu represents our power and possessions gained by own hand, the measure of our earned wealth.

And so my Personal Finance / Net Worth / Dividend Portfolio / Secret Journal was born.
