Pumpkin Update 2018

Happy Halloween!

It’s time again for a Quarterly Blog Stats Update, and to give a home to pictures I like that do not fit well with any other posts.

This is a protective Siberian ‘Bear Hunting’ Suit

I let Loose another Prepper Guest Post, this time at  Mike’d up blog

There is now an update to our Swan FIRE Prowess Numbers, they went up because 2017 turned out to be our best year yet!

I figured since I survived my first year blogging, it was time to step out into the light, sort of.  OthalaFehu went to FinCon18 and had a good time. I got a chance to meet a lot of the people I ‘knew’ from the internet.

FincCon18 did inspire 3 new posts including, No One Smokes at FinCon. I will parse the other 2 out over time.

Already bought my tickets to FinCon19. If you have not gone before, just do it once.

Your hesitation is rational but unnecessary.

I did not even try to remain anonymous at FincCon, it was too weird to use a fake name when asked point blank. My good friend back home figured out I have a blog. I am ok with it since we talk PF shop all the time.

Well, it took 2 full years, but I have become less enchanted with my new job. I was so happy to leave my last position that the relief carried me for a nice long stretch.

The dear wife also hit 20 years as a lawyer this year and I think she feels like that is long enough to wrap the career up in a little box and put it away in the closet.

I need to keep moving towards FIRE.

Samhain (sow-wen) is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from 31 October to 1 November, as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. This is about halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Imbolc, Beltain and Lughnasadh. Samhain is the origin of our Halloween holiday.

  1. The relief from leaving my last job has carried me about 12 years into my “new” one. I occasionally get updates from former colleagues on how bad things till are and I get a nice hit of relief that carries me another 6 months.

I wonder how many Siberian bear hunters were seriously injured while donning their protective suits.

    Happy Samhain to you.

  2. So glad you are going to FinCon next year. There are a handful of blogs (and the bloggers behind them) that I love to follow and the chance to meet them in person is probably the biggest draw for me going to FinCon. I hate that I missed it this year (couldn’t overcome Impostor syndrome) but hopefully I wont be called out as an impostor next year.

Great #s and congrats on the alexa ranking. I’ve been climbing but once you go under a million it seems like the rise slows down dramatically.

    • Alexa is a little perplexing to me, my ranking seems to be higher than some sites that I know get better traffic than me.

  3. So glad to have met you and happy to hear you’ll be returning to FinCon next year. Now we just need to make a Michigan PF meeting happen.

  4. Excellent stats. Once clarification, though. Is the section “Tracing the path back to the following sources” how many hits you got from each source? For instance, are you showing you got 3,795 visits from Reddit?

  5. This is a nice overview Othala and nice to see that solid growth. Keep up the good work! I need to get myself to a Fincon some day. On principle I want it to be self-funded via the blog, but I’m not quite there yet.

    • I figured this FIRE thing is like other people’s hobbies, and it is OK to spend money on a hobby.

      • Agreed. I’ve actually saved tens of thousands of dollars by being in the FIRE mindset which is due primarily to running the blog. The savings have far exceeded the costs.

  6. how in the hell do you get that many from reddit? you have to spend time there and comment and such? i tired that but really just because i wanted to put up a link to my site or one of my posts. maybe i need a sub-reddit. it seems so humorless over there, unlike beating off a shark.

    • Reddit is a peculiar kingdom for sure, lots of haters. I was kind to a newbie blogger once and it turned out he was an OG Reddit guy who hooked me up with a mention in the sidebar of the financialindependence sub-thread. It was like the old Norse habit of being kind to weary travelers because you never know when one of them is Odin traveling in disguise 🙂

Let's get things nice and sparkling clear
